California Federation of Teachers Endorses Bryan Caforio for Congress
Calls Steve Knight’s Anti-Education Voting Record ‘Misguided and Wrong’
Santa Clarita, Calif. – Today, Bryan Caforio, candidate in California’s 25th Congressional District, announced the endorsement of the California Federation of Teachers (CFT) and joins them in calling Rep. Steve Knight’s anti-education, anti-student voting record misguided and wrong for the families of the 25th Congressional District.
The California Federation of Teachers champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities. They are committed to advancing these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through the work of their members.
Joshua Pechthalt, president of the California Federation of Teachers, said, “The one hundred thousand members of the California Federation of Teachers enthusiastically support Bryan Caforio because he recognizes that the future of our state depends on a quality public education system. We support Bryan for his understanding that the path to a strong society is through properly funding the classrooms and programs that our students need. Bryan knows that investing in programs from early childhood education through public universities is how we ensure all our children have full access to the tools they need for active participation in our democracy and employment in the workplace of the future. On the other hand, Rep. Steve Knight’s anti-education, anti-student voting record is misguided and wrong for families in the 25th Congressional District.”
Knight’s legislative record includes voting to cut funding for California colleges in the UC and Cal State system, supporting school vouchers, voting for the 2016 Republican budget that cut Pell Grants, and even voting against children being guaranteed free drinking water in schools. On top of that he has advocated abolishing the Department of Education.
“I’m very pleased to receive the endorsement of the California Federation of Teachers,” said Caforio. “As the son of two public school teachers I understand the value of a good public education and share the mission of the CFT to champion a high-quality education. That’s why I will support fully funding school budgets, with a focus on early childhood education funding, and helping make college more affordable. I echo the CFT’s position condemning Steve Knight’s misguided call to shut down the Department of Education. His actions are an affront to all the hard working teachers, administrators, and parents who fight hard to provide the best future for our nation’s children.”
Early this year Bryan released his Education Progress Plan which supports educators and families by fully funding school budgets and gives more decision making power to educators. Read more about Bryan’s plan here: http://bryancaforio.com/educators-for-caforio/
Caforio was born and raised in Southern California by two public school teachers, attended UCLA and Yale Law School, worked for a United States federal judge, and practices as an attorney taking on some of the world’s biggest banks. Bryan lives in Santa Clarita with his wife Lisa, who serves as a Deputy City Attorney at the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.
The 25th District covers northern Los Angeles County and part of Ventura County including the Antelope Valley, Palmdale, Lancaster, Santa Clarita, and Simi Valley. President Obama won the district in 2008, and experts consider this race a toss-up . Last year Democratic registration eclipsed Republican registration, and the district is now majority-minority. National Republicans list Congressman Knight as one of their most vulnerable incumbents.
