National Nurses United, California Nurses Association Endorse Bryan Caforio for Congress

Groups Call Steve Knight’s Agenda Dangerous for Women’s Health

Santa Clarita, Calif. – Bryan Caforio today announced National Nurses United and the California Nurses Association endorsed his candidacy for Congress in California’s 25th Congressional District, currently held by vulnerable Republican Congressman Steve Knight.

“We are proud to endorse Bryan Caforio and firmly believe he best represents the 185,000 members of National Nurses United and the over 70,000 registered nurses of the California Nurses Association. We find it outrageous Rep. Steve Knight would cut funding for Planned Parenthood, which allows registered nurses the opportunity to provide critical health care to millions of women and families,” said John Michael De La Cerda, Registered Nurse at Antelope Valley Hospital. “It is offensive that Knight thinks he can tell registered nurses how to do our jobs, like taking away our ability to provide contraception. Knight should leave medical decisions to medical professionals and our patients.”

The members of NNU and CNA work together to advance the interests of nurses and their patients, promote effective collective bargaining for registered nurses, and advocate for accessible, quality healthcare for all.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the largest professional association of registered nurses in the U.S.,” said Caforio. “I trust the professional men and women of NNU and CNA and I will go to Congress to fight the extreme anti-women, anti-nurse agenda of Republican Steve Knight, who opposes a woman’s right to choose even in cases of rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is at risk. I believe private, medical decisions are made between a woman and her health care professional, without the intrusion of career Washington politicians.”

Caforio was born and raised in Southern California by two public school teachers, attended UCLA and Yale Law School, worked for a United States federal judge, and practices as an attorney taking on some of the world’s biggest banks. Bryan lives in Santa Clarita with his wife Lisa, who serves as a Deputy City Attorney at the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.

The 25th District covers northern Los Angeles County and part of Ventura County including the Antelope Valley, Palmdale, Lancaster, Santa Clarita, and Simi Valley. President Obama won the district in 2008, and experts consider this race a toss-up . Last year Democratic registration eclipsed Republican registration, and the district is now majority-minority. National Republicans list Congressman Knight as one of their most vulnerable incumbents.
