Caforio Tours Planned Parenthood Antelope Valley Health Center
Local Facility Provides Essential Health Care Services to Antelope Valley Residents

Valencia, Calif. – On Tuesday, Bryan Caforio, candidate for Congress in California’s 25th Congressional District, toured the Planned Parenthood Antelope Valley Health Center. Congressman Steve Knight, who represents the area, has voted consistently to defund centers like the Palmdale facility, which provides essential health services to the Antelope Valley community.

“Planned Parenthood is an invaluable resource for women and families throughout the 25th District,” said Caforio. “In Congress, I will support a family economic agenda that includes fighting for equal pay for equal work, paid sick leave, and affordable childcare. And I will always stand up for women’s access to healthcare and a woman’s right to choose.”

Planned Parenthood’s Antelope Valley Health Center provided 12,718 patient visits in FY14-FY15 and 87% of those patients live at or below the Federal Poverty Line. This health center offers primary care services in addition to reproductive healthcare, providing the community with much needed resources for everything from physicals to colds and coughs.

Despite the vital resources Planned Parenthood provides to the 25th District, Congressman Steve Knight has continued his long record of positions that hurt women and families.

Knight’s record against women includes:

  • Opposing abortion, even in the case of rape, incest, or the life of the woman and co-sponsoring legislation that could ban common forms of birth control like the Pill;
  • Co-sponsoring a bill in Congress that could allow employers to fire single women for being pregnant;
  • Refusing to ask Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act in the state legislature and blocking consideration of the bill once in Congress;
  • Voting against requiring health insurance policies to cover maternity care and against requiring employers to maintain mothers’ healthcare while on maternity leave; and
  • Voting against requiring employers to offer paid sick leave.

The 25th District covers northern Los Angeles County and part of Ventura County including the Antelope Valley, Palmdale, Lancaster, Santa Clarita, and Simi Valley. President Obama won the district in 2008, and experts consider it a toss-up in a Presidential election year. Last year Democratic registration eclipsed Republican registration for the first time, and the district is now majority-minority. National Republicans list Congressman Knight as one of their most vulnerable incumbents.
